Palazzo della Gran Guardia
Palazzo della Gran Guardia is an imposing late Renaissance building, characterized by the overshadowing size of the front (its façade goes beyond 86 meters), which distinguishes itself for the arcade, with wide arches and for the windows highlighted by high coupled columns.
The palace was built in two different historical periods: construction started in the first half of the 17th century, in the baroque style, and it was designed to counterbalance the Arena. Due to a short age of funds, the work was interrupted, only to be completed (along with the steps) two centuries later in 1836.
The palace was initially built by Domenico Cartoni, a pupil of Michele Sanmicheli, for military purposes – troops could also be reviewed on rainy days under the building’s wide porch.
